Who is a good candidate for total knee replacement?

Most patients will be eligible for knee replacement once their symptoms have advanced to a stage where movement is restricted and the pain becomes unmanageable, affecting everyday activities such as work, sleep, and leisure. Knee replacement surgery is typically considered a last resort, following the failure of non-invasive treatment options such as injections, medication, and braces.

If you’ve been advised to undergo knee replacement surgery by an orthopaedic consultant, our team can provide you with a well-informed second opinion.

Types of Knee Replacement

Total Knee Replacement

A total knee replacement may become necessary when patients find themselves having difficulty walking and/or sitting down due to intense pain associated with injury, illness, or arthritis. Our total knee replacement can provide welcome relief from discomfort while restoring function, allowing for a full return to normal activities.

Learn more

Partial Knee Replacement

If osteoarthritis exists in only one part of the knee, you may be a candidate for partial knee replacement, which can provide pain relief and a reduction in symptoms.

Benefits of partial knee replacement include a more natural feel after surgery, accelerated recovery, and less blood loss.

Revision Knee Replacement

While most knee replacement surgeries are successful, there are some circumstances in which a patient may require a revision procedure.

Our skilled knee experts can perform revision knee replacement to alleviate pain and restore optimal mobility. This surgery aims to repair and enhance knee joint function, helping you resume your usual activities.

Recovery after total knee replacement

While you will likely be able to stand up right away after your surgery, walking without assistance may not be possible. You will first need to use the parallel bars before you are introduced to a walker. Most patients regain their ability to move without assistance within around six weeks. Physical therapy can begin right away after surgery to help you regain muscle strength. Within about one month, you will see a major improvement in your pain levels and mobility. Our team will continue to follow up with you to ensure your healing is progressing seamlessly.

Why choose Elanic Medical for my knee replacement?

How long is the recovery time after knee replacement surgery?

Recovery varies for each patient, but most people are up and walking (with assistance) within 24 hours of surgery. Generally, you can expect to return to light activities within 6 weeks and notice significant improvements in mobility and pain relief by 12 weeks. Full recovery may take up to 6 months. Our team provides detailed rehabilitation support to guide your recovery every step of the way.

Will I be in pain after the surgery?

You may experience some discomfort initially, which is a normal part of the healing process. We use advanced anaesthetic techniques and post-operative pain management plans to keep you as comfortable as possible. Most patients report significant pain relief compared to their pre-operative symptoms within just a few weeks.

Is knee replacement surgery safe?

Knee replacement is a well-established and commonly performed procedure with a high success rate. As with any surgery, there are risks, including infection, blood clots, or implant issues—but these are rare. At Elanic Medical, we use state-of-the-art surgical techniques and adhere to rigorous safety protocols to minimise risks and optimise outcomes.

How do I know if I’m a good candidate for knee replacement?

If you’re experiencing chronic knee pain, stiffness, or reduced function that interferes with your daily life—and conservative treatments such as physiotherapy, medication, or injections haven’t helped—you may be a candidate. Our specialists will carry out a thorough assessment, including imaging, to determine whether surgery is appropriate for your needs.

Our orthopaedic consultants are highly experienced, and we use the latest techniques and technologies to ensure the best possible results.
